Description:
Birch buds contain essential oil—the main components of which are betulin, betulinic acid, and caryophyllene—as well as resins, tannins, flavonoids, saponins, macro- and microelements, and other biologically active substances. The buds are elongated-conical, pointed or blunt, and often sticky. The bud scales are arranged in an imbricate (overlapping) pattern, tightly pressed at the edges, and slightly ciliate (the lower scales are shorter than the upper ones, sometimes with tips that curve slightly outward); the buds are 3–7 mm long and 1.5–3 mm in diameter. The buds are brown in color, sometimes greenish at the base. They have a characteristic odor. An aqueous infusion has a slightly astringent, resinous taste.
